Opt-Out/Waiver: Medical and Dental Students

Waiver Periods

If you do not want the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must decline or opt-out of coverage by submitting a waiver. You may only opt-out of coverage during the following Waiver Periods:

School of Medicine

Annual - 05/21/2025 - 08/31/2025

School of Dental Medicine - Orthodontics & Pediatrics

Annual - 05/21/2025 - 07/15/2025

School of Dental Medicine DDS & DMD

Annual - 06/15/2025 - 09/04/2025

Early Start Summer - 04/25/2026 - 05/20/2026


Waiver Criteria

To qualify for a waiver, your health insurance plan must meet the requirements listed below.

School of Medicine (SOM) & School of Dental Medicine (SDM)
To qualify for a waiver, your health insurance plan must meet the requirements as listed below.
1. Be active by the first day of the term you are waiving.
2. Insurance plan must have offices and operate in the US.
3. Provide Primary and Emergency Care within 40 miles of the main UNLV campus.
4. Pay 70% or greater for Inpatient Hospitalization.
5. Pay 70% or greater for Inpatient and Outpatient Mental Health benefits.
6. Provide Prescription Medication coverage.
7. Must have an unlimited Annual Maximum and Deductible of $4,000 or less.
8. Plans must be ACA compliant in order to be considered for a health insurance waiver.
9. Must have Fluid Exposure coverage.
10. Must have Needle Stick coverage.

International students must include proof of medical evacuation coverage of $100,000 or more and repatriation coverage of $25,000 or more.
